About the Bosnian Convertible Mark
The Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM, locally written KM) is the official currency of Bosnia-Herzegovina. It is permanently fixed to the euro at 1 EUR = 1.95583 BAM — this rate has been locked since 1998 and is backed by a currency board, so there is no floating risk between BAM and EUR. Rates against USD, GBP, CHF and other currencies do fluctuate with global markets.
How to pay in Bosnia-Herzegovina
Cards are accepted in larger hotels, restaurants in Sarajevo and Mostar, and petrol stations on main routes. However, cash (BAM) is essential for local buses, market stalls, rural guesthouses, ćevapi stands, and tipping. ATMs are available in all towns — withdraw BAM directly for the best rate. EUR is sometimes accepted in tourist areas but often at a less favourable exchange. For full guidance, see our complete Bosnia money and currency guide.
