Bihać: Una National Park Guided Rafting Adventure

Check availability

The Una River in northwest Bosnia does not get the attention it deserves. While travellers queue at Plitvice Lakes across the border, the Una flows through arguably more dramatic scenery with a fraction of the crowds — waterfalls pouring over emerald pools, canyon walls draped in forest, and a river clean enough to drink from (historically, at least). Una National Park, established in 2008, protects 198 square kilometres of this landscape, and the rafting and kayaking tours based in Bihać are the best way to experience it.

What you raft

The main rafting tour (bihac-una-park-rafting) takes on the technical upper section of the Una, including the approach to and below the Štrbački Buk — a 24-metre waterfall that the rafts run adjacent to. The river here runs through a narrowing canyon, with Class III and IV rapids in the main gorge sections. This is genuine whitewater: you paddle hard, you get wet, and the canyon walls make it spectacular.

The tour typically covers 10–15 km of river over 3–4 hours on the water, with a guide in each raft and safety kayakers on standby at the technical sections.

The relax rafting alternative

The bihac-una-relax-rafting option runs the lower Una, which is calmer and more suitable for families with younger children or travellers who want the scenery without the adrenaline. Water is still clear and beautiful; rapids are Class I–II. This is the right choice for mixed-age groups or anyone who prefers a leisurely float.

The kayak option

The Una Pirates kayaking tour (bihac-una-kayak-pirates) is a guided group kayak — not a kayak clinic — that paddles through the pools and gentler sections of the Una in and around Bihać itself. Guides take the group to viewpoints and quiet coves not accessible on foot. It is family-friendly from around age 6 and ideal for a half-day activity. The name is slightly tongue-in-cheek (guides dress in costume at some points), but the actual paddling is genuine.

What is included

The guided rafting tours typically include:

  • Full equipment (wetsuit, helmet, life jacket, paddle)
  • Experienced guide and safety support
  • Post-rafting refreshments or a riverside meal (varies by operator — check your listing)

Not included: transport from your accommodation if you are not staying in Bihać. Most operators are based at the rafting centres near the Una, a short drive from Bihać town.

How to reach Bihać

Bihać sits in the far northwest of Bosnia, 240 km from Sarajevo. The drive is beautiful but long (3–3.5 hours). There is no useful public transport for this trip — a rental car is strongly recommended for travellers coming from Sarajevo or the coast.

If you are travelling along the Croatian coast, Bihać is a detour worth making: it is roughly 2 hours from Split via the Croatian highway. The western Bosnia Krajina itinerary shows a logical loop combining Bihać, Una National Park, and Jajce.

Who this trip is for

Una National Park rafting is ideal for:

  • Active travellers who want whitewater without the crowds of better-known rivers in the region
  • Families with older children (10+) who can handle Class III–IV water — or younger children on the relax/kayak variants
  • Visitors to Bosnia who have already done the Sarajevo circuit and want to explore the northwest

It is less suited for:

  • Day-trippers from Dubrovnik or Split unless they have a full day and a car
  • Travellers who dislike getting cold and wet

Is it worth the detour?

Yes, without qualification. The Una is among the top five rivers in the Balkans for scenery and water quality. Štrbački Buk is genuinely jaw-dropping in spring, and the national park overall is one of Bosnia’s best-kept secrets. If you have a rental car and can build in an extra day, Bihać and the Una are well worth the trip north.

Frequently asked questions about Una National Park Rafting Tour from Bihać

How difficult is the Una National Park rafting?

The Una National Park rafting tour runs Class III–IV rapids, including the famous Štrbački Buk (24 metres) section. It is suitable for fit adults and older teenagers with no prior rafting experience required, but participants should be good swimmers. A calmer 'relax rafting' option on the lower Una is available for families.

Where is Bihać and how do I get there?

Bihać is in the northwest of Bosnia, in the Bosanska Krajina region, about 240 km northwest of Sarajevo (3–3.5 hours by car). There is no direct public transport from Sarajevo; most visitors arrive by rental car or on organised tours that include transport.

What is the best season for Una rafting?

April to June is ideal — water levels are high after snowmelt, the falls are at their most dramatic, and the valley is green and cool. July and August are also popular but the falls can be less powerful. The season runs from April to October.

Is Una National Park worth the detour from Sarajevo or the coast?

Yes — the Una is widely considered one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe, and Una National Park is significantly less crowded than the comparable Croatian national parks. It is a long day from Sarajevo or the coast, making an overnight in Bihać worthwhile.

What is the kayak pirate option?

The Una Pirates kayaking tour is a guided group kayak on the calmer, pool sections of the Una river — great for families with children from around 6–7 years old who want a water activity without the intensity of full whitewater rafting.

Are camping and multi-day rafting options available on the Una?

Yes, some local operators offer multi-day camping and rafting trips on the upper Una. The GYG listed tours are single-day; for multi-day expeditions, contact local rafting centres in Bihać directly.
