Tito's Cold War Bunker (ARK D-0) Visit

Is Konjic worth a day trip from Sarajevo?

Konjic is one of the best day trips from Sarajevo and highly underrated. It is only 50 minutes away (70 km) and offers three exceptional experiences in one place: ARK D-0 — Tito's secret Cold War nuclear bunker — grade II-III Neretva rafting through a spectacular canyon, and a graceful 17th-century Ottoman bridge over the river. A full day here is extremely well spent.

If you have one day to spare from Sarajevo and want something genuinely extraordinary, go to Konjic. At just 70 kilometres from the capital — 50 minutes by car on the Neretva valley highway — Konjic punches far above its weight. The town has a beautiful Ottoman bridge, a lively bazaar with a tradition of fine woodcarving, and two world-class experiences within 12 km of each other: a completely preserved Cold War nuclear bunker hidden under a mountain, and some of the best whitewater rafting in the Balkans through a spectacular canyon. Very few places in Bosnia offer this much variety in a single day.

Getting from Sarajevo to Konjic

By car

Take the M17 highway south from Sarajevo, following the Neretva river downstream through Pazarić and Bradina. The road quality is good and the canyon scenery improves with every kilometre. Konjic town is on your left after approximately 70 km, roughly 50 minutes at normal speeds. The ARK D-0 bunker entrance at Ostrožac is a further 12 km south on the same road.

By bus

Buses from Sarajevo’s main bus station (Autobusna Stanica) heading to Mostar stop in Konjic. The journey takes about 1 hour and costs approximately 10-14 BAM. Services run several times daily. For the bunker, you will need a taxi from Konjic town (approximately 20-30 BAM each way) or a rental car.

By organised tour

An organised tour from Sarajevo removes all logistics and typically includes the bunker visit and/or rafting, with all transport and guide fees included. The best combined days are the bunker-rafting packages.

Tito’s Cold War Bunker (ARK D-0) visit

ARK D-0 — Tito’s nuclear bunker

What it is

ARK D-0 (Atomsko Ratno Komandno Mjesto D-0) is a 6,500 square metre underground facility built between 1953 and 1979 to shelter Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and up to 350 officials in the event of nuclear war. The facility contains Tito’s presidential apartment, the Politburo conference room, a hospital, a communications centre with original equipment, a fully operational power plant, and 12 km of underground tunnels. It was kept entirely secret until 1992 and cost an estimated 4.6 billion US dollars (at contemporary values) to build.

The facility is open exclusively by guided tour. Photography is permitted throughout. The temperature inside is a constant 10-12°C — bring a layer. Tours take 2-2.5 hours.

See the Tito’s Bunker guide for the full history and what to expect on the tour.

Booking and logistics

Advance booking is essential. Tours have strict capacity limits and popular dates sell out. Admission is approximately 50-80 BAM (25-40 EUR). The bunker entrance is at Ostrožac village, approximately 12 km south of Konjic on the M17. There is free parking at the entrance.

Neretva rafting through the canyon

The river

The Neretva between Konjic and Jablanica flows through one of the deepest and most spectacular gorges in the Balkans — a canyon up to 800 metres deep, with limestone walls rising directly from the water and the river switching between calm green pools and grade II-III rapid sections. The rafting season runs April to October, with spring (April-May) offering higher water and more powerful rapids, and summer (June-September) warmer temperatures for swimming stops.

The experience

A standard Konjic rafting trip covers 12-16 km of the canyon over 3-4 hours on the water. You do not need experience — guides provide all equipment (wetsuit, helmet, lifejacket, paddle) and comprehensive safety briefings. The standard course is graded II-III: exciting but not dangerous for fit adults and teenagers.

Combining with the bunker

The bunker visit (2-2.5 hours) and rafting (4-5 hours including transport and preparation) can be combined in a single day from Sarajevo. Depart Sarajevo at 08:00, visit the bunker by 09:00, have lunch in Konjic around 12:00, start rafting at 13:30, and return to Sarajevo by 19:30-20:00. It is a full and exhausting day, in the best way.

Konjic town

The old town and bridge

Konjic’s old town is centred on the Ottoman bridge over the Neretva — a graceful arched structure of the 17th century. Similar in style to Mostar’s Stari Most but smaller and quieter, the Konjic bridge was damaged during the 1992-1995 war and subsequently rebuilt. Walking across it offers views up the Neretva canyon.

The old bazaar has been a centre of traditional woodcarving for centuries — Konjic woodwork (carved wooden chests, coffee tables, decorative objects) is recognised as a Bosnian intangible cultural heritage. Several workshops on the main bazaar street are open to visitors and sell authentic pieces.

Eating in Konjic

The best food in Konjic is the Neretva trout — the river below the canyon holds excellent wild trout, and the restaurants along the waterfront in town serve it grilled or baked at approximately 15-25 BAM per portion. A full meal with drinks costs 25-40 BAM per person. The waterfront terraces are excellent lunch stops between the bunker and rafting.
